Outward appearances would indicate this is a well-to-do and confident family, but underneath the slick exterior lays feelings of inadequacy and loneliness. Madison appears confident, until she starts to talk about her appearance. Despite having lots of friends, she feels lonely around them at times because of her weight. The boys at school call her “Fatty Madi”, which only adds to her self-consciousness.
Her mother, Michelle, has major body issues because of her weight that have caused her to distance herself from Madison’s dad, Jerry. She’s been engaged to Jerry for 11 years. Michelle says that she’s never married him because she can’t fit her wedding ring on her finger and is also scared of being the centre of attention.
The family is nutritionally clueless. Jerry shows his love by cooking rich, fatty foods for the family and Michelle has zero confidence in the kitchen resorting to pre-packaged and processed foods. Dr Macklin says that the food Madison is being fed is devoid of nutrition, which promotes hunger and makes it difficult for Madison to control her cravings. The family is at the breaking point, and Madison’s parents need to work on their own issues in order to help their daughter.
