Start weight: 180 pounds
Height: 5’0.5"
Percentile score: 99.4
The lowdown: Grade 6 student Hugh is already self-conscious and physically limited because of his weight. He spends all his spare time in front of the TV or computer, indulging in high-fat snacks.
His downfall: Using high-calorie snacks to combat the after school munchies.
Fitness Goal: To go hiking and biking
Overall, Hugh’s family is doing pretty good one year on. They are happy and mostly healthy, although Hugh has gained back a lot of the weight he lost and his dad has put some back on also. Hugh’s dad, Jim, says that getting Hugh motivated to be active is tough, and he gets quite upset if asked to step on the scale. “Perhaps Paul could knock on our door and say, "Welcome back to X-Weighted" to scare him back on track,” jokes Jim.
His mom, Kelly, has put on a little weight but is very active, “I would like to think that some of the weight gain is due to muscles growth in my legs and butt thanks to spin class - I go three days a week and I ensure I work out 5 - 6 days a week,” she says. Kelly says that her challenge will always be making the right choices when it comes to eating, but she has maintained an active life, and is still biking well in to the winter months.
The family is busy, they just did a lot of fundraising to get Hugh’s little brother, Oliver, to the Boy Scouts World Jamboree in Sweden this summer, and they’ve had a fun and hectic social life over the holidays. Oliver has not put any weight back on, and his mom credits his self control around treats as being the reason for this.
